Diginotes lets you turn a question into a link. This page says plainly what is stored when you do that, why, and how to get rid of it.
What we store
When you make a letter, we store what you typed into it:
- the first name you gave for the recipient
- your own name, if you filled it in
- the question and the optional note
- the letter’s code, which is the link
When someone opens your letter we store that it was opened, how many times, and what they answered. We do not store their name, their address, or anything about their device.
You sign in with your email address to make a letter, so we store that address to sign you in and to show you your letters. Signing in creates a session row so you stay signed in, and you can end it by signing out.
We briefly store a counter against your network address to stop one person creating thousands of letters. It holds no personal detail beyond that address and is deleted after a day.
Advertising
Diginotes is free, and advertising pays for it. The ads are served by Google AdSense. They appear on the pages where you write and manage your letters, and one may appear on the way into a letter. Google uses cookies and similar identifiers to show and measure those ads, and may use them to show ads based on your interests. We never give Google the contents of a letter.
If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, you are asked for consent before any advertising cookie is set, and you can refuse. You can also change how Google personalises ads at adssettings.google.com, and read how Google uses data from sites that show its ads at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
What we do not do
- We do not sell anything to anyone.
- We do not run analytics beyond counting that a letter was opened.
- We do not read the contents of your letters except when someone reports one.
Why we are allowed to store it
We store the contents of a letter because you asked us to make it and it cannot work otherwise. We store your email on the basis of the same agreement, because signing in is how a letter is made. We keep the rate-limit counter because we have a legitimate interest in the service not being flooded. Advertising cookies are set only with your consent where the law requires it.
How long it stays
A letter stays until you take it down or ask us to delete it. Taking a letter down stops the link working immediately. Sign-in links expire after fifteen minutes and work once. Rate-limit counters are deleted after a day.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you can ask for a copy of what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it, and we will do that. Write to privacy@diginotes.net. If you think we have handled your data badly you can complain to the Dutch Data Protection Authority, the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens.
Someone sent you a letter you did not want
Every letter has a report link at the bottom. Reporting one tells us to look at it, and we take down anything used to harass someone. You do not need an account to report a letter.
Children
Diginotes is not meant for children under 13. If you believe a child has given us personal data, write to the address above and we will remove it.
